OpenAI adds interactive visuals to ChatGPT with GPT-6 update

OpenAI is launching an Intelligent UI feature in ChatGPT that lets the chatbot answer questions with interactive visuals, The Verge reported on 7 October. The update is rolling out to all users alongside GPT-6. According to The Verge, responses can combine text with diagrams, charts, forms and tappable buttons.

In a blog post, OpenAI said it trained GPT-6 to decide when to generate interactive visuals rather than text, and how to format them in a response. OpenAI shared an example in which ChatGPT shows a diagram of a seven-speed bicycle when asked about its design, with interactive buttons that highlight different parts. Another example shows ChatGPT teaching Mahjong by generating visuals of each tile and placing them into categories users can scroll through.

The Verge reported that users can also ask ChatGPT to generate tools for tasks such as a retirement savings calculator, a retro game or a bill splitter. According to The Verge, ChatGPT then generates the tool in-line with its response.

OpenAI announced its first GPT-6 models in September and is now bringing the Sol and Luna versions to ChatGPT, according to The Verge. OpenAI said GPT-6 also allows ChatGPT to perform better web searches and to provide quicker, partial answers while it gathers information. The company said GPT-6 "showed stronger resistance to attempts to bypass its safety training."
